About
Overview
The Balsas Region is located in the south of the state of Maranhão, making up the agricultural border called MATOPIBA. The main production chains in the region are soybeans and cotton. Despite the technified agriculture, the region has low economic development indexes, demonstrating the need to support family farmers. Located in the Brazilian Cerrado, it is one of the largest grain producers in the North and Northeast, representing an important agricultural frontier in the country.
Historic
The PCI Compact of the Balsas Region was formalized in November 2020, includes 12 municipalities and currently has 39 signatories representing the public and private sectors, as well as civil society organizations. In April 2021, this group of partners created the Compact Steering Committee.
