About
Since 2022, IDH in India has created a shared agenda for sustainability in the coffee sector. Under the guidance of the Coffee Board of India and in close collaboaration with private sector partners, public actors and the civil society; IDH has furthered interventions to mitigate some of the challenges (around information asymmetry, optimal farming practices and market access) through strengthening the climate resilient farming in coffee production systems spread across the coffee production region of the Western Ghats.
The India Coffee Climate Resilient Landscape (ICCRL) Program, which was launched in 2025, in the IUCN designated Biodiversity Hotspot area of Southern India. This program has been rolled out in three districts of Karnataka (Kodagu, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru), and one district of Kerala (Wayanad). These regions are known for their rich coffee landscapes and biodiversity, making them critical areas for sustainable interventions.
The ICCRL Program follows the IDH landscape approach, uses an innovative, integrated model to foster agricultural ecosystems that conserve and enhance natural resources and build community resilience whilst enabling businesses to source responsibly.
The ICCRL Program follows IDH’s Production, Protection, and Inclusion (PPI) framework, focusing on regenerative coffee production while ensuring environmental protection and social inclusion.
This landscape approach bridges market demand for responsibly produced commodities with local governance, driving co-investment in regenerative production practices to enhance resilience and sustainability in these coffee-growing regions.
