✍🏽 Home to incredible wildlife and rich environmental value, Sabah remains an environmentally vulnerable region where palm oil-driven deforestation continues.
Palm farming in Sabah strongly focuses on smallholders. Smallholders' certification processes are often intensive, and the absence of formal land titles remains a major barrier. Without land titles, smallholders are unable to access certification, which limits their ability to participate in sustainable supply chains.
Another issue is the lack of available workforce, especially as aging palm trees require more labor to manage. This challenge is compounded by an aging farmer population, which further limits capacity on the ground.
Since 2011, Earthworm has been active in Sabah, working to address key issues such as smallholder resilience and biodiversity conservation.
