Cu M'gar District People's Committee Implements a Commitment to Prevent Forest Clearing and Encroachment in a move to comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

In a move to comply with the EUDR, the Cu M'gar District People's Committee has rolled out an initiative where local households are signing commitments to abstain from clearing or encroaching land for agricultural production.

This effort follows Decision No. 2220/QD-UBND issued by the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee on November 1, 2023, which outlined an action plan to implement solutions aligned with the EUDR's requirements to combat deforestation in the province. Over two days on April 18-19, 2024, the Cư M'gar District People's Committee and the Compact Steering Committee collaborated with the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative to hold a conference. The event aimed to introduce the EUDR's policies against forest loss and degradation and facilitate the signing of commitments by residents in the forested Ea Kuêh, Ea Kiet, and Ea M'roh communes, (communes with forests). The conference was attended by Representatives of the District People's Committee; Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Forest Ranger District; Buon Wing Forestry One Member Limited Company; the Buon Ja Wam Forestry Company Limited; along with village leaders and cooperative representatives from companies such as Intimex Buon Ma Thuot, Dakman, and Sucden Coffee.

At a recent meeting, the representative from the District People's Committee stressed the urgent need to implement solutions to meet the requirements of the EUDR. With the regulation set to take effect by the end of 2024, the district People's Committee leaders called on specialized agencies, commune authorities, the Youth Union, the Women's Union, the Farmers’ Association, and other stakeholders to work together to accelerate the surveying and data collection on forests and production to comply with the EUDR. The district leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening communication and raising awareness among community members so that every family and citizen understands the EUDR requirements and their responsibility to “protect forest resources, the environment and providing complete/ truthful production data” to build the national production information and data system.

At the Conference, the Memorandum of Commitment “Preventing deforestation and encroachment of forest land for agricultural production” was signed by the Cu M'gar Forest Ranger District, state-owned forestry companies, commune authorities, village management boards, and local residents.
