About
The Responsible Commodities Facility (RCF) is an innovative financial solution that connects capital markets to Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Brazil through the issuance of green bonds in international markets. The first programme, launched in 2022, provides incentives to farmers to produce soy without any deforestation or conversion, legal or illegal, in the Brazilian Cerrado, one of the world’s most biodiverse biomes.
The initial investment came from three major UK Supermarkets, looking to deliver on their sustainable supply chain commitments. This investment created an entirely new model for supply chain companies to directly fund sustainable food production, rather than through grants or by buying sustainability credits. By using a blended finance approach, RCF has leveraged the impact investment with capital of large banks and Government funds, magnifying their impact by 400%.
In 2025/26 with a combined investment for US$60 million, the programme provided finance to 280 farms, which it expects to produce more than 240,000 tonnes of deforestation and conversion-free soy. This would result in the conservation of around 90,000 ha of native vegetation, ca.29,000 ha of which are in excess of legal obligations, protecting over 22 MtCO2e carbon stocks.
In April 2026 an investment in the RCF of US$85 million was confirmed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), secured until 2038.
